VIDEO #1 - Isle of Man Line & Wash by Joanne Thomas

In this watercolour lesson, artist Joanne Thomas takes you through her loose, impressionistic style of painting.

You've probably seen some of Joanne's floral videos.  Her range of landscapes is equally as inspiring and encouraging.  In this beautiful, rain-soaked scene from the Isle of Mann, Jo uses both watercolour and waterproof ink to create an image that anyone can reproduce.

Title: Isle of Man Line & Wash
Medium: Watercolour
Artist: Joanne Thomas
Level: Intermediate

  11. I really enjoy watching Joanne paint ... I'm trying to paint loose which is a challenge for me. Loved her sunflower and the window from the previous series. This was terrific. Thanks so much.

  13. Thank you for this lovely tutorial! It's very motivating and next weekend I'll definitely give it a go.
First I had the loading problem, too. But simply click on the "reload" button of your browser and got right back to minute 26 or so and it will run to the end with no problem at all.

Thank you again for your effort!

  16. Wow! This video is amazing! I want to give this a try right away. Unfortunately, the video got hung up at around the 25-minute spot, so I couldn't see the completed painting. But otherwise, I LOVED it!

  28. A good demonstration by a good teacher. May I suggest that when the website is running, you have a downloadable pdf file that you can make notes on whilst watching the demonstration. For example in this one a copy of the black and white image with spaces around it or under it for notes. Also you could include a list of items needed or something that the presenter really wanted you to remember.

  29. Am so excited about Art Tutor. Joanne is so enthusiastic and explains so well. I have tried line and wash, but now I realize how stilted it was compared to her way of painting. Will definitely be painting along with her. Look forward to the florals.

  31. I was fortunate to see the whole video. It was so inspiring. I love the way Joanna visibly enjoys what she is doing. I have even found if I ´imitate´ her seemingly uncontrolled gestures that it does a lot to my own painting. It is really loosening my otherwise cramped style.

  32. Thanks for the great demo. I purchased her Florals lessons and truly enjoyed them.

Will this be a line and wash course only or mostly a watercolour one? I hope it will be line and wash, that is sorely needed whereas watercolour lessons are a dime a dozen -- and the best is still your Watercolour Secrets, Bob!

Also, will the printable drawings be provided, as for the Watercolour Secrets course? I found that really useful.

  33. Dear Joanne,
Thanks for this lesson of Line & Wash. I am looking forward to the winter when I have more time to try this all out. Amazing what you can do with some paint and a pencil!
I enjoyed already looking your dvd of the flowers. Difficult to choose between oil, acrylic, pastels or watercolor, but I think I prefer the watercolor because of the surprises you get while painting.
Looking forward fot the coming video's.

I have been waiting and watching and following the Art Tutor concept since the first email from Bob and I am very glad you are a part of the group! I can't wait for more videos from you. Your style is very different from mine, I'm a bit stiff, so I am excited to give it a go and try your style out for a change!

  40. It would be very very helpful to have a lesson or two on shadows. I find myself very challenged in putting in the right shadow and layers of shadows to almost everything I do. I am never sure on the size of the shadow or the placements, of shadows on let's say animals, furniture or people. Shadows give a painting (for me water color, pen and ink and colored pencils) grounding and dimension. I feel lost in this area.
I have purchased your entire set Bob and it's great- but the whold shadow thing and using them to create realism is still a mystery.
    Thanks!

  59. Hello everyone... a few people above have mentioned about the video stopping at 26 mins. I'm not sure if that was a temporary problem at YouTube.com. It can also be down to your web browser )for example Internet Explorer has several add-ons that can interfere with YouTube videos. Here is the link to watch Jo's lesson directly on YouTube...
